Local, national and international immersion opportunities

Sacré Cœur provides enriching opportunities for students to connect with other cultures, both within Australia and beyond. Through the Society of the Sacred Heart, our school is part of a thriving international network of more than 150 schools in 41 countries. Through this network, we offer a number of programs with sister schools, each designed to help students pursue their interests and grow as global thinkers.

Virtual collaboration program

This program sees students in Years 9 and 10 from schools across Australia, Japan, Taiwan and New Zealand, coming together. Students learn more about each other and discuss global issues, exploring how they can be collectively addressed. The development of key 21st century skills is an important feature of this program.

Local and international immersion

Through our Sacred Heart Sister School Immersion Program and the ANZNet Sacred Heart Immersion Program, Sacré Cœur students can participate in diverse, in-person collaboration and immersion opportunities within Australia as well as with our international sister schools in the United States, New Zealand, Japan, Canada and Europe.

Our global immersion tour to India sees students travelling with peers from our sister schools in Sydney (Kincoppal-Rose Bay) and Brisbane (Stuartholme School). Students and teachers visit sister schools in Mumbai and Hargegaon, immersing themselves in Indian culture and learning more about RSCJ schools within our network

Students learning Japanese may participate in our Japanese Language Tour, immersing themselves in Japanese language and culture over a two-week period. This tour includes a homestay with students and their families from our sister school, Sacred Heart School, Tokyo.

Years 5 and 6 communication exchange

In Years 5 and 6, our French language students are excited to link with students at Groupe Scolaire Sophie Barat in Châtenay-Malabry, Paris, France, making international connections through letters and short videos.

Indigenous immersion

Years 10 and 11 students can experience an Indigenous immersion to the remote homelands of Cape York. Students have the rare opportunity to make real connections with Indigenous Australians, who have maintained a deep connection to their land, culture and history.

We have returned with an appreciation for the lives we live, along with a greater sense of what is truly important in life: love, family, friendships and land. We are extremely grateful for this amazing experience.

Joigny Junior School

Named after the birthplace in France of our Sacred Heart founder, St Madeleine Sophie Barat, Joigny is a stimulating, challenging and caring environment for students from Prep to Year 6.A Joigny education builds upon the natural curiosity and enthusiasm children possess, fostering a strong sense of agency and capability (self-efficacy) in each of our students.

Five values form the key tenets of our contemporary learning framework

Purpose

Connection

We understand that each student learns in her own way and at her own rate, and meet these individual needs through differentiated approaches.

Every Joigny student is well-known, supported by a team of specialist teachers including their dedicated Class Teacher. At each year level from Prep-Year 6, students take part in specialist programs that include French, Physical Education, Visual Arts, Music, Choir and Digital Technologies.

In addition, a particular feature of our Junior School curriculum is the Wellness program through which our students are explicitly taught personal and social capabilities to assist the development of their social skills, wellbeing practices, leadership potential and self-efficacy.

Prep to year 2 Foundation Years

The school experience in the foundation years of Prep to Year 2 encourages children to explore and builds upon their natural curiosity, with particular focus upon literacy and numeracy. Our programs reflect a relentless determination to ensure success for all, which is achieved by having high expectations for all students, providing early intervention for children who are having difficulties and ensuring students are actively engaged during learning time.

Specialist programs in Music, Choir, Visual Art, French, Physical Education, Digital Technology and Library enable our students to develop skills and understandings across diverse areas. In addition to Music and Choir, students in Year 2 also participate in an Instrumental program, in which the girls learn to play stringed instruments.

The Student Leadership program begins from Prep, provided through classroom programs as well as the positions of Class Representatives on the Student Representative Council and the Green Team (environmental sustainability group).

Years 3 and 4 Middle Primary Years

Developmentally, learners in Years 3 and 4 become less egocentric and more focussed and persistent. During these years, the students are encouraged to look beyond themselves to the wider world making connections with the environment, sustainability and other global issues which impact on their own world.

As part of their Religious Education program, students in Years 3 and 4 participate in the Sacramental Program. Students in Year 3 receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation and students receive the Sacrament of First Eucharist in Year 4.

In Year 3, students take part in an overnight camp experience based onsite. In Year 4 the students take part in an overnight camp at an offsite venue.

The Student Leadership program is provided through classroom programs as well as the positions of Class Representatives on the Student Representative Council and the Green Team (environmental sustainability group).

The Co-Curricular program offers Years 3 and 4 students opportunities to develop areas of interest beyond classroom learning, and includes activities such as: House Sport; Squad Training (swimming, diving, cross country running, athletics); Chess Club; Yoga; Tennis lessons; Garden Gang; Bow Rock (stringed instrumental group); Calm Club and Drama Club.

Years 5 and 6 Senior Primary Years

In preparation for their transition to Senior School, Years 5 and 6 students develop independence in their learning and a strong sense of self through leadership and personal growth programs.

Specialist programs are undertaken in Visual Art, French, Physical Education, Library, Choir, Digital Technology and Music. In addition to Choir and Music lessons, all Year 5 students study a musical instrument in small groups for the year, participating in various ensembles.

In Year 5, students take part in a three day/two night camp experience that focuses upon the development of personal and interpersonal skills. Students in Year 6 participate in a three day/two night camp that seeks to further develop their independence and sense of self.

In addition to the classroom and class representative positions available in the younger year levels, the Student Leadership program for Years 5 and 6 students calls upon the students to be actively seeking to assist and lead the Junior School. In Year 5, all students take part in the Prep/Year 5 Buddy program which focuses upon outreach to others. In their final year of Junior school, all Year 6 students take part in a leadership program that sees them inducted into leadership positions as members of committees that hold particular responsibilities for the year.
